The nominations for the 2020 Bafta’s were announced on Thursday morning. However, there was a huge shock for EastEnders fans as they were shockingly left out of the nominations for Best Soap and Continuing Drama. The shock was huge given that EastEnders won that award last year.
This year’s event will be unlike anything previously, with the ceremony taking place virtually at the end of July. The whole event will be televised on the BBC, with Coronation Street and Emmerdale likely to fight it out for the Best Soap award.
BAFTA 2020 Awards: Chernobyl Leads The Way In Nominations
Critically acclaimed mini-series Chernobyl looks set to be one of the biggest winners of the night, as it has been awarded nominations in the three main categories. The show was one of the most-watched shows last year and is based on the nuclear disaster of 1986.
The show was awarded with 14 nominations, which equals the most ever. That previous record was set just last year as Killing Eve was awarded 14 nominations. Chernobyl’s 14 nominations is double the total recorded by The Crown. They will both stand to win their separate awards, with Chernobyl expected to win best Drama Series, and The Crown likely to win Best Drama. The Crown will face stiff competition in the form of The End Of The F***ing World and Girl/Haji.
BAFTA 2020 Awards: Fleabag Received Six Nominations
Fleabag will also be looking for more success at the awards ceremonies as it is up for six awards. However, it will face stiff competition in the Scripted Comedy category, with Derry Girls and Catastrophe both also nominated. There will also be a competitive category in the form of Must-See Moment.
Fleabag’s confessional scene is included in that section, which Arya killing the Night King in Game of Thrones is also included. Michael’s dramatic recoupling after Casa Amor in Love Island, and John Corbett’s death in Line of Duty is also included. Sinead Osbourne’s death in Coronation Street is the only soap moment in that category, but the winner will likely be Nessa proposing to Smithy in the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers in the Christmas episode of Gavin and Stacey.
