ABC ‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers is saying that can we just put our hands together for the guy portraying Mike Corbin, AKA, Max Gail? Because he has done a hell of a job portraying Mike Corbin’s end of life struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. While yes, some of the things were funny, like this past year’s ‘whose ring is it anyway’ debacle, this recent storyline where it’s the end of the road for Mike, is truly, truly heart-wrenching.
Recently, Mike took a fall at Turning Woods, and he has been unable, or rather, unwilling, to get up and move around afterward. The doctors can find no medical reason as to why he can’t get up and move around, they say that he’s just been shaken up. Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Bernard) has tried to encourage him to get up and walk around and even tried to get the nurse in there with the wheelchair so that maybe Mike could at least have some semblance of mobility, but so far, Mike’s mind has played the most horrible trick on him of all. It has managed to convince him that he is indeed truly down for the count, and he cannot get up again.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: MIke’s Heartbreaking Struggle
People who have dealt with aging parents and other people who are at the end of their lives, will recognize this struggle. I know I could. It’s sad indeed, but the mind is a powerful thing sometimes. It can convince us that we are truly invincible and nothing can harm us at all, or in Mike’s case it can convince us that simply standing up on the side of the bed will cause us to take a fatal tumble. It’s sad when our own mental capacities turn against us. Sonny did finally convince his Dad to get up and take a stroll with him down a hospital corridor, but that was even more heartbreaking. He didn’t know Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) when he saw him again and told them that this wasn’t right, that he should be dead.
However, usually, when things like this happen within a soap opera, there’s some truth behind it. Mike said that he didn’t know Brando, so that makes us wonder if something truly is fishy with Brando, and perhaps Mike was trying to grasp a memory that was true, but his mind was betraying him. We’re pretty sure that everything will come out in the wash, but this gives us pause about Brando, what if Mike’s “I don’t know him.” was actually real, and that his brain was just being honest? What if the conspiracy involving Brando and Gladys goes five layers deep? I’m just saying it could happen.
That all being said, we know that Mike’s time here on this earth is limited. I’m glad that Sonny was able to convince him to get up and take one last stroll with him and that his feet didn’t fail him this time. Life in Port Charles is going to be a lot less amusing without Mike around, he’s added some humor and warmth to the Port Charles landscape, and we’ll miss him when he’s no longer with us. So hats off to Max Gail, who has made this end of life portrayal a touching, and accurate one. We’ll all be following what happens to Mike… so, stay tuned!!!
