ABC ‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal GH might have been a bit generous. Not long ago, they made a point of saying they had seven weeks of episodes left to air. And given they moved to a four-day schedule, announcing Flashback Fridays until May 22nd, one would assume the new content was enough to last through that. That might have been the wrong assumption. After watching today’s episode, in particular, we think they would run out a lot faster than they made it sound. Here’s what we see.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: To Be Fair
Let’s be fair. It’s not GH’s fault they should end up running out of material. Most people would probably be choosing to work if they could. Circumstances beyond anyone’s control have shut down production. With the way most soaps run, that means a shortage of new episodes. However, we think the network/producers weren’t very upfront about the situation. And here’s why.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Déjà Vu
Flashbacks have taken more of a part in the episodes lately. In fact, fans were beginning to comment in online groups about it. We noticed that as well, but today seemed especially bad. For example, in one bit we see a quick shot of Jason standing around before it launched into at least five minutes of flashbacks of his relationship with Sam McCall. No lead up at all. When we see him again, he’s meeting with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Bernard). There really seemed to be no point, other than to fill time.
It also felt very disjointed. The last we saw Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn), she was telling Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) that neither had heard anything regarding her night with Neil Byrne (Joe Flanigan) getting out. When we see them today, Neil looks worse for wear and they’re talking as though he’s already been tossed and she did as well. The conversation steered toward what they’ll do now that they don’t have to hide. It felt off.
Other scenes were similar to the two we just mentioned. All told, we seriously don’t think we’re exaggerating to say the episode was around half flashback. Maybe even a little more. It seems like they’re cutting up the remaining episodes and adding in tons of flashbacks to stretch out the content left. We think that’s a disservice.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The Why
Here’s the thing, in our opinion. ‘General Hospital’ spoilers indicate the show was getting good, what with the mob war and other situations going on. If this is what’s going on, they’re sacrificing quality for quantity. Going out on a weak note until they can film again is sure to chase away at least some fans. Same with their choices for Flashback Friday so far.
Soaps are in a very unique position, as opposed to another scripted programming. GH has over five decades of material to work with. Something shows with a shorter history, such as Y&R and B&B are making good use of. Those shows either ran out of new material or chose to hold some back for later. They’re using this time to introduce new fans to some older arcs, which is almost like having new content. Plus, older fans seem open to the idea of revisiting classic stories. GH has those in spades. We recently hosted a web show with someone who used to watch the show and would love to see the older episodes again. There’s a definitely demand out there, as old show clips seem popular on YouTube. We think GH has an opportunity here they need to take. Will they? We’ll have to wait and see.
