CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) spoilers here with a fun epiphany/speculation we noticed while watching Y&R’s latest episode when Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) “accidentally” met at the Grand Phoenix.
To be honest, it was like getting struck by a bolt of lightning when they met, and we really should thank Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) for arranging their paths to intersect. Is it possible for a disease to appreciate such things? Meh, maybe. Anyway, it brought to mind how similar Nick and Billy are, which only further explains Nick’s disgust and animosity toward Billy.
CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Is Nick Jealous of Billy?
Both are driven men that have a similar mindset — they want to prove themselves on their own. Billy has previously sabotaged things because he couldn’t stand prosperity. But how much of it was because he was lashing out after being pushed into a corner he didn’t like or want to be in?

‘Young and the Restless’ Spoilers have mentioned previously that everyone in his life is trying to control him, trying to manipulate him into something he’s not, and when he decided to walk away, they increased the pressure. In fact, they pushed him away and toward the very thing they claimed to want to protect him from. Sure, he’ll probably cross a line at some point because free thinkers in these shows must be punished (They emulate society pretty well, don’t they?). He dared throw off the yoke of the Newman family and heir expectations, so he must be broken and deemed a screwup to vindicate the Newman and Abbott view of his choices.
Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) is practically a mirror image of Billy, except he doesn’t lash out in the same way. Or when he does, it’s accepted with kinder gloves and a “we understand, son” mentality that’s as degrading and humiliating as what the Abbotts and Newmans do to Billy. Like Billy Boy, Nick has tried to throw the Newman yoke off time and again, but he always returns to the family like a good little soldier. Sure, he acts like he’s there to help, but he’s easily controlled by his father, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), and has accepted the fact he is what he is.
This time, he returned to “save” the family from his brother, Adam Newman (Mark Grossman), who just so happens to resist their father’s attempts at controlling him. In fact, when Adam was finally ready to accept the family yoke like a good soldier, he was refused because they feared he wouldn’t do what he was told. Nick is now suffering under the weight of Victor’s expectations and watchfulness because he is the black sheep wannabe.
CBS ‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Nick wants to be like Billy, but lacks the drive
Whenever Nick crosses paths with Adam or Billy, he has a look of disgust on his face and treats them like anti-christs. It’s just like his father would expect, and it makes him a good soldier. It also pisses him off. When CBS The Young and the Restless Spoilers look at his reactions to them, he always has a viable reason for acting the way he does. Adam did this, Billy did that. Currently, it’s Billy’s fault his sister, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) was injured and he’s stuck taking one for the family. Like a good soldier.
But his animosity feels more like he’s jealous that they’ve been able to resist and refused to be broken by Victor or Victoria. In fact, currently Billy isn’t just the reason Victoria is hurt, but he’s why Nick had to go back to Newman Enterprises as acting CEO when he was free and clear. He doesn’t want to be there, so why should he have to put up with the man he views as responsible and has been fighting to find his own way?
The sad part about this is we can see Nick’s struggle to break free, so maybe that’s why Phyllis worked it out so he and Billy would cross paths. Maybe, just maybe she’s looking to awaken the sleeping rebel within him to take over Newman Enterprises and make it his own. It’d free him of the family obligations (in her mind) and give her even more power.
Of she could just be a manipulative disease that is looking to spread her sickness far and wide. Whatever her reasoning, she’s playing on Nick’s frustration and jealousy to fuel him into another direction. Nothing like a good run through the makeup of a powerful family, right? What do you think?
