Netflix and Sony has great news for movie lovers. Matilda the Musical is coming to our screens. The new movie is based on an adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl children’s storybook and 1996 film “Matilda”. Netflix and Song will produce the movie together and it will receive a full theatrical and video run in the UK before it starts to stream on Netflix.
This news is coming almost two years after Netflix announced that it was hoping to adapt some of Roald Dahl’s books, including Matilda. The list included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG. Sony’s Tri-Star unit produced Matilda the movie that didn’t meet up to expectations at the box office but won the heart of many fans.

For the streaming giant, this deal gives it an opportunity to get streaming rights to a pre-branded property that people love. Matilda the Musical has been running in the UK since 2011 and has also played in many places in the world. The musical ran on Broadway from 2013 to 2017, after it had made 1,555 performances and won four Tony Awards. According to sources, details of the release date of the musical has not been decided. We don’t know how the two big companies will split the cost of production and when the theatrical run will be released on Netflix.
