‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal that there were a lot of shake-ups in soap world recently. One of these included bringing in a new Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) after actress Michelle Stafford left the show to take on the part of Phyllis Summers on ‘Young and the Restless’. Fan reaction has been a bit divided, but we’re loving this new face. Here’s why…
‘General Hospital’ spoilers: Doing her homework
Cynthia Watros is impressing us first off by obviously doing her homework. Although she definitely brings her own style to the part, we can see where she’s taking her cues from her predecessor in both delivery and body language. There have been several scenes where you can see this, including her scenes with Sofia Mattsson (Sasha Gilmore).
‘General Hospital’ spoilers: The difference
There is one big difference, however, in her portrayal that we find very appealing. She seems a bit more down-to-earth and feisty, whereas Stafford often came off as a bit ice-queenish in the role. This made her scenes hard to watch at times, and left us rooting for Nina to suffer.
With Watros, we’re finding we feel some empathy for the character and her obvious pain when the truth of Sasha’s origin is revealed. Also, by focusing less on her parent/teacher rivalry with Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) since Watros came around, the story is more engaging.
‘General Hospital’ spoilers: Striking twice
This isn’t the first time that’s happened lately, either. In recent months, ‘Days of Our Lives’ brought Kate Mansi back to the part of Abigail Deveraux, which had a similar effect. The character came off as less snobby/uppity, and much more likeable. It made the ensuing story of Abigail trying to prove her sanity much more entertaining and allowed us to root for her. Sometimes changing it up is exactly what a show needs to breathe new life into something going stale, and that was definitely the case with Nina. Here’s hoping that Watros continues to play the part for years to come.
