El Secreto de Selena spoilers for Sunday, September 29th have Maria Celeste Arrarás (Sofía Lama) fighting for interviews, Selena Quintanilla (Maya Zapata) fighting for her career, and a court room battle. There’s also a thirst for revenge after Selena’s death. If you missed it, let’s get to your El Secreto de Selena recap.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Revenge
People are fighting mad about the loss of Selena. There is a group that is trying to raise the bail money so they can have Yolanda Saldívar (Damayanti Quintanar) on the outside to make her pay for Selena’s death. A woman in jail with Yolanda also makes a silent threat against her from across the room.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Courtroom fight
Today, the fight begins in the courtroom as the two sides in the case fight over details. The defense wants the bail lowered, as it’s impossible for a poor family raise the funds. That ultimately does happen, but not low enough to help. Yolanda will stay locked up through the trial.
Another point of contention is the venue. The defense believes there is no way for Yolanda to get a fair trial in Corpus Christie. The State thinks that if OJ got a fair trial in LA, she can get one here. The venue request is eventually granted.
The other really big sticking point is finances. As the motive is built around Yolanda stealing from the Quintanillas, the defense wants access to the fan club records, the Q productions records, and Selena and Abraham Quintanilla’s (Jorge Zárate) records as well. The State disagrees, arguing that Selena and her family are the victims and not on trial here. The request for fan club records is eventually granted, but not the personal records.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Taking it outside
Outside the courtroom, the defense says that Yolanda is unfairly being tried in the press. Her family as well.
They’re not the only ones. When Abraham comes out, the reporters start asking about the financial records and if he has been evading taxes. Abraham says they will fight the request for records, but not because they have anything to hide. Their papers are in order. He feels that the request is nothing but a way to distract from the real issue: the murder of his daughter.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Appeal
In more outside the courtroom drama, the Mrs. isn’t happy that Douglas Tinker (José Sefami) is defending Yolanda. She has been seeing the press around this, and had heard about the previous lawyer quitting due to being threatened. He laughs this off and insists that he is sticking with the case. He wants to be known as the best lawyer in the country.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Blunder
Maria Celeste, after the trial, continues to have problems with Manny. This time, it’s because she forgot an important meeting with a client. He’s upset, because the wives of everyone else involved are there. She apologizes. Some book stuff came up that night, and time got away. He thinks she should stay home and do her thing, and he’ll do his.
She wasn’t fairing better during the trial days, professionally-speaking. The interviews she’d had lined up are canceling, most likely due to legal reasons. She wants to get an interview with the Saldívar family, as it is imperative to get both sides to be a fair journalist. Her family isn’t biting though. While Maria Celeste seems different than the other reporters, they’ve been forbidden by the defense team to speak to anyone in the press.
Maria Celeste does, however, seem to make headway with one of the defense lawyers later.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Career ambitions
Today, we see some things that are similar themes to the 1997 movie, but also some things that seem inaccurate.

On the inaccurate side, Selena performs Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” on stage, whereas videos on YouTube show her as performing a Debbie Gibson song during her shows instead. Sticking with the movie themes, though, it backs up the backstory of dealing with some early resistance to playing other music, something that Abraham experienced in his own music days. A meeting following the performance talks about that a bit, and how audiences are just not ready for her to cross over yet. She wants to, though, and will be ready as soon as José Behar (Hector Kotsifakis) thinks it’s time.
Another seeming inaccuracy that is part of her rising success story this week is the recording of the hit, Donde Quiera Que Estés (Wherever You Are). The show makes it seem like this was a Selena thing and shows her recording the full song with Los Dinos backing her. In reality, Selena was a guest on the track for a Barrio Boyzz album. She didn’t sing most of the parts they showed her performing, although she did have a prominent feature and the song became a hit for them all.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Awkward position
The success she’s reaching makes the cross over dream a reality today. José has decided it’s time, but she is going to have to make some changes to reach an English audience. He wants her to do a more pop style, and he wants top English writers on the project. Selena objects, because AB Quintanilla (Baltimore Beltrán) is the creative force behind her success. Their fans love his songs. José argues that the change is needed for the English market, but says that AB can participate somewhat behind the scenes. Once a little time goes by, and he’s learned from the other writers, they can talk about him taking a more creative role in the second album.
This leads to brief tension in the family that wasn’t really addressed in the movie. AB eventually feels bad and apologizes for him getting angry about her not fighting for him to be the writer for the album.
